What is Hexadecimal?

Hexadecimal is simply another way of counting. Humans count to the numerical base ten naturally because we have ten fingers. We count 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 and then we have to make a mark to tell us we counted ten, then we start again. Imagine you had eight fingers on each hand, how would you count then? This is hexadecimal, counting to the numerical base 16. It goes 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F,10 make a mark and start again! We use A,B,C,D,E,F because we have no single numbers that correspond to 10,11,12,13,14,and 15.

Why use Hexadecimal?

Computers count in binary. Converting from binary to our normal base 10 arithmetic is not easy. But look at this:

Do you notice? Converting binary to Hexadecimal and back is easy, all you have to know is the first 16 binary numbers -0000 to 1111 and you can simply decide what the hex is from the binary and vice versa. This is one reson why hexadecimal is popular with programmers!

Another reason is that writing down huge numbers is a breeze in hex. Lets say you have a memory location in the computer that you use an awful lot in the program you are writing, it is 234,873,789. The hex for this is DFFE3BD, much shorter and easier.

HTML/CSS uses hexadecimal for color specification, an html color reference looks like #FF0203. So do you know what color that is? I can tell you without trying that it will be a red. This is because the first two digits (FF) are red intensity, the second two (02) are green intensity and the third (03) are blue intensity. Similarly #222222 would be a dark grey, #FFFFFF is white, #0AFF01 would be a green, and so on.

Ways Hexadecimal is written

There is no convention as regards letter case, Ff3, FF3 and ff3 are all the same number (4083 in decimal). When writing Hex numbers into programs written in PHP, C, Perl etc the convention is to signal to the program the number is in hexadecimal by prefixing it with 0x. So our FF3 would become 0xFF3. As already mentioned HTML uses hex for colours but does not follow this convention, instead it uses a # prefix.
