Processing all files in a directory using PHP

You will notice that the file extension automatically becomes an asterisk (*) if its is blank, this will select all files. An old trick has been used on line 7 where a little used character (tilde ~) is tacked onto the filename before testing to avoid having to use php's === operator and negating it (since php in many circumstances regards false and 0 as interchangeable) in addition a dash has been tacked onto the prefix to make it unlikely to match with the random characters. The function also returns true if any files were deleted and false if not.
